Youth Engagement in Climate Policy Process Begins: Armenia Launches Climate Change Youth Advisory Board
The official launch of the Climate Change Youth Advisory Board, established under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Armenia and UNICEF, took place during the event held at the State Museum of Nature of Armenia.
The event aimed to provide an open and engaging platform for young stakeholders and partners to connect, exchange ideas, and collaboratively define the Board’s priorities and actions for the coming year. This initiative is grounded in the belief that meaningful youth participation is essential to shaping inclusive and impactful climate action in Armenia.
Aram Meymaryan, Deputy Minister of Environment of the RA; Christine Weigand, UNICEF Representative in Armenia; and representatives from the Ministry of Environment of the RA and UNICEF attended the event.
In his speech, Aram Meymaryan emphasized the vital role youth play in addressing environmental challenges, stating:
“As a ministry, we expect the board members to demonstrate strong responsibility, a proactive approach, and a spirit of partnership. We stand ready to fully support and accompany you in implementing your ideas—whether they pertain to local initiatives or representing Armenia on international platforms.”
Christine Weigand, UNICEF Representative in Armenia, highlighted Armenia’s active engagement at the international level and the importance of youth participation in her remarks, stating:
“Last year, the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child welcomed the Government of Armenia’s signing of the UNICEF Intergovernmental Declaration on Children, Youth, and Climate Action. The Committee called for more proactive measures to raise children’s awareness and preparedness for climate change and natural disasters, and urged the integration of climate change impacts on children into national policies and programs. We are especially grateful to the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Armenia not only for supporting the establishment of this Board but also for its openness to listening to young people’s voices in national climate policy discussions.”
The young board members expressed their concerns, proposed solutions, and addressed questions to the Deputy Minister of Environment, outlining their approaches to environmental challenges.
The day concluded with a symbolic tree-planting ceremony, symbolizing the youth’s commitment and responsibility to building a sustainable and green future for Armenia.
