Requirements for the preliminary treatment of industrial wastewater were established.
Starting from July 1, 2026, it will be prohibited to discharge industrial wastewater into centralized sewage systems if it does not meet the requirements.
The government decision established the requirements for the preliminary treatment of industrial wastewater. The decision was developed in line with the 2021–2026 Action Plan of the Government.
The newly adopted requirements are fully aligned with relevant EU directives.
In particular:
According to the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive, industrial wastewater entering drainage systems and urban wastewater treatment plants must undergo preliminary treatment to ensure that it: does not damage drainage systems, treatment plants or related equipment and does not hinder the operation of the treatment plant or the treatment of sludge.
According to the Industrial Emissions Directive, if a production facility is connected to an urban wastewater treatment plant through a collector, preliminary treatment is required when the wastewater may damage or overload the plant, or when it contains hazardous substances (e.g., heavy metals, toxic substances, acids) or poses a microbiological risk.
Adoption of this Decision will ensure that industrial wastewater is adequately treated before being discharged into the drainage system. This will contribute to the maintenance and efficient operation of drainage networks and treatment plants, as well as to environmental protection.
