The "Natural Capital" Symposium Was Held

From June 3rd to 7th, 2024 the "Natural Capital" symposium was held at Stanford University of the United States of America, in which Aram Meimaryan, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Environment, Paruyr Simonyan, Advisor to the Minister and Voskehat Grigoryan, Head of Specially Protected Areas and Biodiversity Policy Department, Alexander Arakelyan, Head of the Armenian Component of NatCap and Vardan Karapetyan, Senior Project Officer at ADB participated.
Leaders of more than 16 pilot countries, multilateral development banks, academic institutions, and stakeholders met at Stanford University from June 3 to 7 to integrate the natural capital assessment process into state-led policies, inform decision-making, and share experiences. The event was organized jointly with the "Natural Capital" program, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the "Inter-American Development Bank".
ADB's Agriculture, Food, Nature and Rural Development Sector Office is supporting 5 countries, including the Republic of Armenia, to include natural capital assessment and accounting in policy and investment decision-making processes.
Within the scope of the cooperation, the pilot program of inclusion of natural capital in the Ararat water basin management plan is being implemented, which will lay the foundation for the introduction of natural capital accounting and assessment of ecosystem services.
This program will integrate the role of natural ecosystems in ensuring the quality and quantity of groundwater and surface water in the Ararat BMP to better address the sources of significant risks (land conversion and degradation and climate change). The project will also highlight opportunities to improve water security through management of natural capital in the basin.
This information will be used by the ADB and the MoE to target investments in important ecosystems, particularly the conservation or restoration of forested areas or wetlands near water sources.

These actions can ensure proper water quality by improving natural systems that reduce erosion, filtering pollutants and helping ensure flow during the low-water season, thus contributing to the country's water security.
During the symposium, Aram Meimaryan and Alexander Arakelyan gave speeches and conducted panel discussions, presenting the course of the pilot program and the priorities of the country.
