The “National Clean Air Dialogue" Workshop Was Held

Aram Meymaryan, Deputy Minister of Environment of the RA; Françoise Jacob, UN Resident Coordinator in Armenia; Frank Hess, Head of the Cooperation Department of the EU Delegation to Armenia; Sarangoo Radnaraagchaa, Regional Advisor to the UNECE; Irina Ghaplanyan, Senior Climate Change Advisor at the World Bank; Carolin Sanz Noriega, Air Convention Secretariat at the UNECE; along with officials from the relevant departments of the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, Yerevan Municipality, the Ministry of Environment, and representatives from non-governmental organizations, attended the workshop.
The aim of the dialogue was to hold discussions on major air quality issues at national level, as well as on approaches for meeting emission reduction commitments; understand the most effective and efficient policies and progress in their implementation, including to promote clean air policies and best practices; promote synergies and avoid policy tensions between air quality, climate and energy, transport, agricultural and other policies, as well as links with health policy. 
After welcoming the workshop participants, Aram Meymaryan, Deputy Minister of Environment of the RA highlighted the importance of clean air and efforts to reduce air pollution. “Our policy focuses on implementing legislative reforms, adopting modern technologies, and raising public awareness. Since joining the Air Convention in 1997, the Republic of Armenia has committed to contributing to the overall objective of the Convention: to limit, and as much as possible, progressively reduce and prevent air pollution, including transboundary pollution. The National Action Plan for the Ratification and Implementation of the Convention's Protocols was developed under the Convention and presented at a high-level meeting on September 25, 2019. Five years after the development of the National Action Plan, it is now time to review the progress," said the Deputy Minister.
Levon Azizyan, Director of the "Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center" SNCO of the MoE, Gayane Shahnazaryan, UNECE Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution, Arpine Panoyan, Head of the Atmospheric Policy Department of the MoE, Lusine Avetisyan, Head of the Strategic Policy Department of the MoE, Nona Budoyan, Head of the Climate Policy Department of the MoE, and others made speeches on clean air progress, action plans, air quality, pollution reduction, climate change, and vehicle emissions reduction policies.
During the workshop, a fruitful discussion was held on the next steps for implementing the National Action Plan for the ratification of the Air Convention protocols.
The meeting concluded with a question-and-answer session.
