The Government has approved a draft law establishing the procedure for state monitoring of atmospheric air and the provision of air quality data. The draft law defines the procedures for conducting monitoring, collecting, analyzing, and assessing data, as well as for making air quality information publicly available.
According to the draft law, state monitoring of atmospheric air will be carried out exclusively by the “Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center” SNCO of the Ministry of Environment of the RA, which will also be the sole body authorized to provide official air quality data.
The legislation further provides for the introduction of an air quality index and mechanisms for informing the public, including sensitive and vulnerable groups, about potential health impacts and recommended preventive measures.
The law is scheduled to enter into force on 1 January 2028.
At the same time, the Government approved a draft decision on a presidential decree endorsing the “Economic and Social Development” grant agreement between the Republic of Armenia and Japan. Under the agreement, the Government of the Republic of Armenia will receive a grant of 250 million Japanese yen (approximately USD 1.6 million) for the procurement of equipment for air quality monitoring stations.
Within the framework of the grant, it is envisaged to modernize three observation stations of the national observation network with modern automatic measurement equipment produced by the Japanese company Horiba.
