Ahead of the COP28 conference, Armenia summarized the progress of implementation of the annually defined actions.
Highlighting regular workshops and consultations with the government, private and public sector, donor and support partners on the way to fulfilling the commitment under the Paris Agreement, an annual summary of the progress of the implementation of the actions defined at the National level was held today.
The holding of this workshop is opportune as it takes place ahead of the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP-28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) from 30 November to 12 December 2023, hosted by the Government of the United Arab Emirates. where the world will summarize the progress made towards the implementation of the Paris Agreement. The first Global Stocktake aims to contribute to the coordination of climate action and efforts, including action to fill progress gaps.
Minister of Environment Hakob Simidyan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the Republic of Armenia Nariman Al-Mulla, Permanent Representative of UNDP in Armenia Natia Natsvlishvili, decision-makers in the framework of climate policy, including representatives of the Government, international and non-governmental organizations, journalists participated in the workshop.
In his speech, Minister Hakob Simidyan highlighted the commitments undertaken by the country in the agenda of climate priorities and the proper implementation of measures and programs arising from them.
"Our country attaches importance to the proper implementation of the obligations undertaken under the Paris Agreement, because it is based on the principles of green economy and is compatible with the goals of social and economic development of the country. the government emphasizes regular consultations with international partners on national climate priorities and needs. The interested discussions held in this format contribute to the coordinated and effective implementation of joint actions and programs," the minister noted.
"Climate change is a global challenge that crosses borders and transcends politics. It is not a mere responsibility that can be borne by only one nation or group of nations. Therefore, to achieve our common goal, correcting the direction of the global course is imperative. Therefore, "COP28 UAE", as the next step in our collective journey, calls on the world to "Unite, act, fulfill", said Nariman Al-Mulla, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the Republic of Armenia.
The Permanent Representative of the UNDP office in Armenia, Natia Natsvlishvili, highly appreciated the long-term cooperation between the UNDP and the RA government aimed at the development of Armenia's priority sectors.
"This event, organized before the 28th Conference of the Parties, is a good opportunity to review the work done in the country towards the implementation of the climate agenda and to discuss with partners the possibilities of improving policies and increasing efficiency at the program level. As the first Global Stocktaking at the 28th Conference of the Parties will provide comprehensive information on progress in the implementation of the Paris Agreement, it is crucial to understand where we are and what actions are needed to fill the gaps.”
The workshop was held around 4 thematic directions, which were defined by the UN COP for COP28: they are Mitigation, Adaptation, Implementation and Support, and Integrated and Holistic Approach. Such a framework is aimed at raising awareness among stakeholders on how Armenia contributes to global efforts to curb global warming, adapt to the effects of climate change, deploy tools and mobilize support to create the necessary legal, economic, technical and institutional frameworks and implement policies and actions. which effectively contribute to the development of the capacities of state and non-state actors.
