Hambardzum Matevosyan, Minister of Environment of the RA, met with the delegation of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Secretariat.
The meeting aimed to officially present the Fund’s activities and reaffirm the positive, constructive, and expanding cooperation between Armenia and the GCF.
Ara Mkrtchyan, Deputy Minister of Environment of the RA, and Armen Yesoyan, Director of the Environmental Project Implementation Unit SA, also participated in the meeting.
During the discussions, the parties reviewed the financial, technical, and expert support toolkit provided by the Green Climate Fund (GCF). They discussed areas where joint efforts could yield more effective results, particularly in the implementation of national climate policy, environmental programmes, and sustainable development initiatives. Representatives of the GCF delegation also presented several successful programmes implemented in other countries that could serve as an example for Armenia.
One of the key topics of the meeting was the organization of the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17), scheduled to be held in Armenia in 2026. Minister Hambardzum Matevosyan briefed his colleagues on the readiness and strategic approaches of the Government of the Republic of Armenia to host the conference at a high standard. The parties discussed potential agenda priorities, organizational matters, and explored opportunities for the Green Climate Fund’s involvement, including expert support, programme cooperation, and co-financing of certain organizational components.
Minister Matevosyan emphasized that COP17 presents a unique opportunity for Armenia to demonstrate its role as a responsible, visionary, and cooperative partner on the international stage. He highlighted that the conference will serve as a vital platform to consolidate global expertise and resources in support of biodiversity conservation, ecosystem resilience, and an effective response to climate challenges.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the parties reaffirmed their commitment to further deepen cooperation, with the aim of jointly developing initiatives, advancing new programmes, and strengthening Armenia’s position in the international environmental partnership network.
