A long-term development strategy with low greenhouse gas emissions has been adopted

The RA government has adopted a long-term development strategy with low emissions of greenhouse gases.
The government has approved the long-term (until 2050) development strategy of RA with low emissions of greenhouse gases. The strategy was developed by the Ministry of Environment with the support of the EU-UNDP regional project "EU4Climate".
The strategy is central to the implementation of the country's climate commitments under the Paris Agreement. With the adoption of the document, Armenia joins the group of about 7 dozen countries that have already announced the goal of achieving climate neutrality in the long term. With this strategy, the government reaffirms its ambition to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 2.07 t CO2 equivalent per capita by 2050.
By adopting the strategy, the Government pursues the following goals:
- ensuring a long-term agenda for climate commitments,
- providing early and predictable signals to investors and sectors of the economy in order to plan their long-term actions,
- alignment of development goals with climate action and systematic consideration of opportunities across the entire economy,
- development of economic policies in line with the trends of technological progress, transforming challenges into opportunities.
The strategy covers 5 key areas for reducing greenhouse gas emissions (energy, agriculture, industrial processes, forestry and other land use, and waste), presenting key policy directions and program initiatives according to scenarios. They are aimed at ensuring the technological progress and sustainable development of sectors, while realizing the great potential of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the same sectors.
The three scenarios considered will be a landmark on the way to achieve the formed vision, with the logic of expecting appropriate results for the invested efforts and making policy adjustments if necessary.
