Minister Hambardzum Matevosyan Participated in the Expert Session on "How to Conserve the Global Water Balance"

As part of the International Conference on Nature and Environmental Protection held in the Altai Republic, Hambardzum Matevosyan, Minister of Environment of the RA, participated in an expert session on "How to Conserve the Global Water Balance."
Rrepresentatives from Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan also attended the session.
In his speech, Minister Matevosyan addressed the adverse impacts of climate change on water resources, highlighting that Armenia’s mountainous ecosystems are among the most vulnerable. He noted that reducing precipitation and decreasing water reserves increase the vulnerability of the water sector.
The Minister presented the measures being undertaken by the Government of Armenia to address these issues:

  • Introduction of water-saving technologies and drip irrigation systems;
  • Implementation of loss reduction programmes within water systems;
  • Legislative reforms in water resources management;
  • Approval of a five-year national climate change adaptation programme (2022–2026), aimed at reducing climate risks in the water resources sector and ensuring effective implementation of adaptation strategies.

The Minister also emphasized the importance of maintaining the water balance of Lake Sevan and prioritizing ecosystem restoration.
During the conference, he underscored the need for international cooperation and the exchange of expertise. In this context, he highlighted the significance of the 17th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17), scheduled to be held in Armenia in 2026, and invited partners to actively participate.
The Minister assured that, thanks to joint efforts and the support of international partners, an effective and sustainable water resources management system can be established to support the development of both Armenia and the entire region.
