A high-level conference entitled “The Grey Zone of Water” was held in Bled, Slovenia, focusing on global water security challenges. Tanja Fajon, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of Slovenia, Anton Mežan, Mayor of Bled, Marko Gajić, Co-Founder of the World Water Forum, as well as representatives from various countries and international environmental experts participated in the event.
Ara Mkrtchyan, Deputy Minister of Environment of the RA, represented Armenia at the conference, delivering a speech on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Armenia. He expressed gratitude to Slovenia for its warm hospitality and excellent organization of the event, highlighting the significance of such platforms in fostering innovative solutions for sustainable water resources management.
Ara Mkrtchyan presented Armenia's vulnerability to to the impacts of climate change, due to its mountainous terrain, semi-desert climate, and limited water resources. According to him, the level of water consumption in the country is high, while precipitation is decreasing and evaporation rates are increasing.
The Deputy Minister highlighted key actions undertaken by the Government of Armenia in recent years to address water and climate issues, including:
The concept and program for the introduction of water-saving technologies adopted in 2019,
The Water Code revised in 2022, which integrates climate considerations and sets binding requirements for water management,
The launch of the 2022–2026 Climate Change Adaptation Program in the water sector, aimed at mitigating socio-economic impacts..
In conclusion, Ara Mkrtchyan reaffirmed the Republic of Armenia’s commitment to continued active cooperation with international partners to advance climate stability and the effective management of water resources.
