“Sevan” national park“ SNCO is very grateful to the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund for the given opportunity to improve the global conservation status of Armenian endemic - Sevan trout (Salmo ischchan).
By means of this authoritative fund we have started the project directed to the conservation and regeneration of Sevan trout as well as to the effective conservation and saving from extinction. During the project “Sevan” national park“ SNCO has undertaken measurements for enlightening and awareness of problems connected with the conservation of Sevan trout among entrepreneurs who are involved in economic entities in the whole shoreline of lake Sevan as well as to engage them in this very significant works. There are conducted meetings with the coastal community population and fishermen as well as with local self-governing bodies and environmental activists for emphasizing their role in the conservation of nature resources of lake Sevan and mainly for conservation of Sevan trout. Except that “Sevan” national park“ SNCO has organized seminars about the existing and new distribution zones of Sevan trout.
The studies show that the reason for present disastrous situation of population of Sevan trout is not only the water level reduction but also the unregulated fish catching in the lake. For this reason “Sevan” national park“ SNCO has developed and introduced to the appropriate bodies a concept for productive fishing which will provide effective conservation for Sevan trout as well as for other fish species in the lake Sevan. In addition, “Sevan” national park“ SNCO has developed also a concept about the designation of “Sevan” national park“ SNCO to the biosphere reserve which will define new zones for conservation of Sevan trout and will regulate the types of economic entities at coastal zones of lake Sevan.
In 2017 in result of unprecedented increase of water level of the lake there are created favorable conditions for the spawning of summer bakhtak. As it is known summer bakhtak is spawning in April-May and the ban of crayfish hunting promotes to the breeding of summer bakhtak. During the crayfish hunting ban the employees of “Sevan” national park“ SNCO have implemented strict control to prevent illegal hunting in the lake and to conserve the population of Sevan trout.
At the end of the project “Sevan” national park“ SNCO will develop a program to register 2 subspecies of Sevan trout in the list of IUCN.
