The mission arrived in Armenia will evaluate OSCE’s activities for 2004-2017 in the direction of supporting Aarhus Centres

On May 6-12 Senior Evaluator of the Office of Internal Oversight of OSCE Secretariat Birger Heldt will arrive in Armenia. The objective of the visit is to evaluate the activities of OSCE programme directed to bolstering  the network of 15 Public Environmental Information Aarhus Centres operating in Armenia. The evaluation will be conducted by the OSCE Office of Internal Oversight within the framework of 2018 oversight project; besides Armenia, the Republic of Serbia and Tajikistan are also included.   On May 7 there will be held a meeting along with relevant heads of subdivisions and workers of the RA Ministry of Nature Protection, in the course of which the issues relating to accomplished works will be considered, including the opportunities of providing further support to Aarhus Centres by the OSCE. By ratifying the Aarhus Convention in 2001, the RA Government assumed the responsibility to bring national environmental protection legislation into accordance with the provisions of the Convention, undertake steps to implement the Convention as well. For that purpose, Public Environmental Information Aarhus Centres embarked on operating in 2002 under the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Ministry of Nature Protection of the Republic of Armenia and OSCE Office in Yerevan. To promote awareness raising on environmental matters, raising legal knowledge and legal practices, the OSCE Office in Yerevan along with the RA MNP established the Aarhus Centre in Yerevan: the first similar organization in the world. Therefore, in response to the undertaking of the state regional bodies, 14 Centres were opened in RA regions with the support of the OSCE. The assistance project of Aarhus Centres in Armenia is recognized as the best one in the OSCE.
