A training workshop on ''The danger and prohibition of open burning '' took place in Aragacotn region

A training seminar was held in Aarhus Centre operating in the city of Aparan, Aragacotn region, organized within the scopes of “Best Available Techniques and Best Environmental Practices (BAT/BEP) for reduction of unintentionally produced persistent organic pollutants releases from open burning sources” project implemented by the RA Ministry of Nature Protection along with United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).   The representatives of the RA state regional governmental bodies, the heads of communities, the officers of Aragacotn Regional Division of the RA MNP Environmental Protection and Mining Inspection Body as well as specialists of interested departments attended the training seminar. The workshop focused on the implementation of the responsibilities undertaken by the Republic of Armenia under Stockholm Convention on ''Persistent Organic Pollutants''. The principal thesis of Stockholm Convention is the reduction of dioxin and furan emissions, thus open burning in landfills is regarded as one of their main sources.  In the course of the workshop Head of Hazardous Substances and Waste Policy Division of the RA Ministry of Nature Protection Staff Anahit Aleksandryan and Head of Environmental Hygiene Division of “National Center for Disease Control and Prevention” SNCO of the Healthcare Ministry of the Republic of Armenia Ruben Grigoryan delivered reports, by presenting the legislation streamlining waste management, including requirements for sanitary in waste and landfill management.    After the submission of reports an absorbing discussion was led on the issues concerning the danger of open burning of wastes in landfill sites, its prohibition, health impacts.
